Ray
A ribbon like figure caused by the strands of cells which extend across the grain in quarter-sawn lumber. See Medullary Rays.

Rift-sawn
Rift-sawing at a 30-degree or greater angle to the growth rings produces narrow boards with accentuated vertical or “straight” grain patterns. Rift-sawn boards are often favored for fine furniture and other applications where matching grain is important. This type of lumber is available in limited quantities and species.

Rotary-Peel Cut

Rift-Sawn
A method of cutting a log into boards that ensures each board has the same relation to the log, providing the same grain pattern. This is the most stable lumber. Also known as bastard sawn.

Resistance to staining
Allows an insight as to how the wood flooring will resist staining when subjected to a number of potential staining agents.

Repairs
Replacing sections of hardwood with new material to avoid having to sand and refinish the entire floor.

Refinish
Refers to the practice of sanding down a wood floor and finishing it again, to reduce the appearance of damage, wear, and tear. A solid wood floor can be sanded and refinished many times. However, an engineered wood floor can only be sanded and refinished if the veneer is 2mm or thicker.
