Overwood/Underwood
A flooring condition in which there is a perceived misalignment of the flooring surface, with some wood pieces raised above adjacent pieces leaving a slightly uneven surface. Also called lippage.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB)
Commonly used as an underlayment or subfloor material. Strands tend to be oriented with their length aligned with the panel length (typically). OSB is therefore stiffer and stronger when installed with the long axis across supports.

Open-Grained
Common classification of painters for woods with large pores, such as oak, ash, chestnut, and walnut. This is also known as ‘coarse texture’.

Open Coat
A piece of sandpaper with abrasive particles that are spread out to prevent clogging.

Oxalic Acid
A poisonous strong acid that occurs in various plants as oxalates and is used especially as a bleaching or cleaning agent and in making dyes. One of the strongest organic acids. Other chemical or common names include Dibasic acid; Ethanedioic acid; Acid of sugar.

Overlap Stair Nose
Function as to help finishing transition from the material used on the stairs to the material used on the floor.

Overlap Reducer
Used to provide a transition between different types of flooring, often between flooring of different heights.

OSB
An acronym used to describe oriented strand board, a type of subflooring material.

One-Sided Reducer
Has one sloped side and one flushed side and is used to transition from hardwood to other flooring types.

On Grade
Refers to the ground level of a building as it is at the same level as the surrounding ground.
