Category: Glossary of Terms -M
-
Mineral Streak
Wood containing an accumulation of mineral matter introduced by sap flow, causing an unnatural color ranging from greenish brown to black.
-
Manufacturing Defects
Includes all defects or blemishes that are produced in manufacturing, such as chipped grain, torn grain, skips in dressing, hit-and-miss (a series of surfaced areas with skips between them), variation in machining, machine burn, and mismatching.
-
Multiple-Use Management
Management of land resources with the objective of achieving optimum yields of products and services from a given area without impairing the productive capacity of the site.
-
Multiple-Use Forestry
Concept of forest management that combines two or more objectives, such as production of wood or wood-derivative products, forage and brown for domestic livestock, proper environmental conditions for wildlife, landscape effects, protection against floods and erosion, recreation, and protection of water supplies.
-
Microbevel
An extremely narrow bevel along a cutting edge, which increases the sharpness angle for greater edge durability.
-
MDF
Medium density fiberboard, very stable underlay for counter tops etc. to be covered with laminate.
-
Machine Stress-Rated (MSR Lumber)
Lumber that has been evaluated by mechanical stress rating equipment; each piece is nondestructively tested and marked to indicate the modulus of elasticity. MSR lumber is also required to meet certain visual requirements.
-
Moisture content (MC)
The weight of water contained in wood expressed as a percentage of the weight of the oven dry wood. NOFMA/NWFA hardwood flooring is manufactured at 6 to 9 percent moisture content, with a 5 percent allowance for pieces up to 12 percent moisture content.
-
Modulus of rupture
The equivalent fibre stress at maximum load. A constant used in structural design and obtained by loading pieces of wood to destruction. Modulus of rupture is an accepted criterion of strength, although it is not a true stress because the formula by which it is computed is valid only to the elastic limit.
