Chipped Grain
A machining defect in which small chips are torn from the surface below the intended plane of cut, usually as the result of cutting against the grain.
-
Chamfer
A bevel or slope created by slicing off the square edge or end of a piece of wood or other material (usually 45 degrees); a decorative edging or relief made at the timber’s corner.
-
Compressive strength
The ability to resist a force tending to shorten a structural member by crushing the fibres longitudinally.
-
Carbon sequestration
During growth trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Once trees are harvested and processed to produce sawn lumber (or any other wood product) they continue to store this CO2. This act of storing CO2 is referred to as sequestration.
-
Carbon footprint
A summary of all the greenhouse gases emitted during the making process of an object and is expressed in kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO2 eq).
-
Compressive Stress Perpendicular to Grain
Reported as stress at proportional limit. There is no clearly defined ultimate stress for this property.
-
Checks
Longitudinal separation of the fibers in wood that do not go through the whole cross section. Checks result from tension stresses during the drying process. A lumber defect caused by uneven shrinking of the wood during drying. A checked board has splits that develop lengthwise across the growth rings.
-
Cure
The action of allowing the finish to completely dry and reach its fullest hardness potential. Different finishes will cure at different rates.
-
Cutting Method
Usually refers to how the solid hardwood veneer for an engineered floor is cut. There are three cutting methods: dry solid-sawn, rotary-peeled and sliced-peel.
